The Kern River Valley what a fantastic place to live in or visit. There are so many places to see so many things to do. Boating, Fishing, Camping, Hiking, Nature walks, also great Hunting. We the people that live here in the Kern River Valley are glad to call this our home. We are a very versatile people here but that’s ok because there is something for everyone, young or mature.

This time of the year when the breeze blows a little crisper, the sun sets a little earlier and we see hunters gearing up we know summer is almost over.

Hunting is a very popular sport here in the Kern River Valley. Hunters come from many different states to hunt game here and we’re very proud of that fact. Another fact we are proud of is that our accidents are at a very low percentage. As we all know to get a license to hunt you must take a, Hunter Safety Course. After passing this course a certificate is issued to prove compliance of the rules and regulations then, you may acquire a Hunting license. I was very fortunate just lately to talk with one of the three gentlemen, that teach this course. His name is Mr. Flip Chimnitzer. He is a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation Gun Safety Expert, and has taught many classes on this subject. Who better, to be taught by than an expert?

This class does more than just teach us about gun safety. It is an involved class that we could all benefit from, even if we don’t carry a gun, and just enjoy being in the woods.

Some of the things included in the class are:

Hunter Responsibility

Wildlife Conservation and Wildlife Management

FireArms including Hunting Heritage and Early History of Firearms, Rifles,

Shotguns, Cleaning and Storage, Ammunition, Firearm handling and safety, Marksmanship and Shooting Fundamentals.

Wildlife Identification.

Game Care.

Specialty Hunting: Introduction to Muzzle loading, Introduction to Handguns, Introduction to Bow hunting.

Survival and First Aid.

Water Safety.

Special Concerns: Alcohol and Drugs, Turkey Hunting, Trapping, All Terrain Vehicles, Hunting Dogs.

Last but not least Resources.

This class is very educational and very interesting, good for any age group.

Did you know that the annual population losses to our wildlife fall in this manner?

No. 1. Disease

No. 2. Starvation

No. 3. Predators

No. 4. Accidents / Pollution

No. 5. Old Age

No. 6 Sports Hunting

Did you know that how much food, cover, water, and space are located in an area determine how much wildlife can live there? Habitat can support only a certain number of wildlife each year without hurting the wildlife or habitat.

Folks this is a very interesting class. Give them a call at California Department of Fish and Game to find out when the next class begins.
