Welcome
...
The Kern River, with a gradient of 30 feet per mile, the Kern is one of the steepest and
wildest rivers in North America. Hosting wildlife and beautiful flowers along its
shores, its cozy campgrounds nestle between the pine trees and peace and quiet can
still be found. The river is divided into four sections; Lower-below Isabella Dam, Upper
Kern from Johnsondale Bridge to Riverkern Beach, the Forks of the Kern beginning 45 miles
north of Kernville and the South fork Isabella Lake feed. Rafting
...
Just 3 hours north of Los Angles, the Kern River is readily available for the white-water
rafting enthusiast. From guided tours, offered by commercial operators, to your own
private boat, the fun is there and just waiting to be had, beginning with the spring
run-off in March right through September.
Kayakers ...
Already well known for white-water rafting,
kayakers
have also found that the raging waters of the Kern River are a fantastic place to try
their talent in this particular sport. The obstacles in the river only add to the
excitement and elation at the finish of a run. Riverside Park in Kernville, one time host
for the 1972 Olympic tryouts, also hosts the Annual Slalom Kayak Race each year in April.
See the Calendar of Events section for specific dates.
Swimming ...
Because of fast-running waters, treacherous current and hidden obstacles, swimming in the
Kern River is not recommended at any time. Even wading has taken its toll on the
unsuspecting visitor. Remember, you dont have to be in the river to enjoy its
beauty and strength For safety reasons it is highly advised that everyone in or near the
river always wear a life vest.

Tubers
...
When the Kern River runs through Riverside Park in Kernville, watch out for the tubers.
The cool waters of the river are most refreshing in the summer months and since there are
many unseen obstacles under the water when its running high, its
recommended
that tubers wait until the waters slow down a bit before entering the water. During the
summer months the river is not quite as deep and fast flowing and most obstacles are
clearly visible. But dont fret
the waters still have a few rapids and its
just as much fun. Remember, always wear a life vest when in and near the river.
