General rentals are not available except for pilots using the Kern Valley Airport located on Sierra Way in Kernville.

Local service is provided by AT&T wireless and Johnstone's Kern Valley Telco call them at
760 379-3631. 

Taxi Service ...
At this time there is no known local taxi service provided within the Kern River Valley. Check with Yellow Cab Company of Bakersfield for service.

Bus ...
Local Kern River Transit System services the valley with trips throughout the day to all areas. Trips to and from Bakersfield are also scheduled. See government listings.

Air Travel ...
Kern Valley Airport located on Sierra Way 5 miles south of Kernville, is equipped to handle most private airplanes. It’s open sunrise to sundown. No commercial airlines service the area at this time. Car rentals are available for pilots. See government listings.

Medical ...
Kern Valley Hospital located in Mt. Mesa, is a general acute care facility with 24-hour emergency care. The Kern Valley Health Center is a new medical clinic in Wofford Heights and greatly enhances the level of medical care here in the valley. Ambulance services are offered by Care Ambulance of Kernville.

Weather ...
Situated at 2,700-feet above sea level, the Kern Valley avoids the temperatures associated with either higher or lower elevations. This land of four distinct, yet mild seasons is very appealing to its residents and many visitors. Details

Gas ...
Fuel for your auto, RV, or boat is readily found throughout the Kern River Valley. Major stations include Chevron, Shell, Union 76, and Texaco and some with diesel. Many independent stations also serve the valley and all are ready to take care of your needs.

Food ...
Finding a place to eat while visiting the Kern River Valley is never a problem. From quick food at local mini-marts to hamburger stands, pizza, family diners and fine dining, we have it all. Check the listings in the Explorer to find the right place to tempt your taste buds or try the Fast Fax for a complete copy of selected menus.

Lodging ...
The Kern River Valley has 21 motels and 3 bed & breakfasts as well as numerous campgrounds. Although the majority of the area campgrounds are public, there are four in the Kern River Valley that are privately owned and operated. Telephone listings for motel lodging or privately owned campgrounds can be found under the business listings. Campground maps and information are available in this publication or from the U.S. Forest Service Visitors Center. See government listings.

Hunting Licenses ...
Hunting is one of the many sports available to interested visitors and residents in the Kern River Valley. Every person wishing to involve himself or herself in this sport must possess a valid California Hunting License and, if required, special tags for certain species of game. Hunting licenses are available at a standard fee from many of the local merchants here in the valley. Proof of completing the Hunter Safety Course must be shown before a hunting license will be issued.

Wild Life ...
The peaceful life in the Kern River Valley not only attracts humans, but wildlife as well. Watching the antics of a gray squirrel or ground squirrel will bring a smile to your face and the wonder of nature will amaze you when you see the gracefulness of the deer in the area. Visit the U.S. Forestry in Kernville or go by the Visitors Center in Lake Isabella. A small museum displays some species.

Hollywood
...
Lights…camera…!! The Kern River Valley is a popular site for moviemakers. Find out if there are plans for Hollywood to be in the area in the near future by contacting the U.S. Forest Service Visitors Center or the Lake Isabella Visitors Council. Livestock Grazing
...
Grazing cattle along the roadside has been part of the local scenery for over a hundred years. Watch closely for animals on or near the roadway…they’re an unpredictable bunch of critters and just may want a closer look at your vehicle.

Drinking Water ...
Drinking water is available from the river, streams, and the lake, but should only be used after proper treatment. It is recommended that water be filtered and boiled 5 minutes prior to use.

Water Service ...
Several small independent water companies provide water to the valley.

Heating ...
Several propane companies supply the Kern River Valley with propane. See the business listings for names and telephone numbers. There is no natural gas in the area.

Fire Prevention ...
Fire danger is very high during the summer months. Please help by making sure all campfires are extinguished with water before leaving your site.

Southern California Edison Company provides all service to the Kern River Valley.

Campground Etiquette ...
The rules are simple, if you pack it in…pack it out. Leave no trace! Be courteous of other campers and people fishing. Keep the noise down, respect the space of other people and don’t trespass on private property. For the time you are here, this is your home…treat it with respect. If everyone follows these simple, but so very important suggestions, the Kern River Valley will be peaceful, beautiful place that caught your eye to begin with. Local service is provided by GTE/Contel and Kern Valley Teleco. The area code is 760 and local prefixes are 376, 378, and 379

Fires ...
Fire permits are not necessary when staying in a designated campground. However, permits are required in all wilderness areas.

Firearms ...
Discharging firearms is prohibited within 150 yards of a campground, trail, road, and recreation area or across a body of water. A target range is located off Sierra Way, about 2 miles south of Kernville. It is operated by the Kern River Valley Gun Association under a special use permit and is open to the public, weather permitting.
